Halloween as a parent is a tough one. So much sugar, so much junk, and a house full of kids riding the sugar rollercoaster until well past bedtime. Then in mid-November you find a half-eaten lollipop stuck to the couch.
One little trick has saved our Halloweens: the Witch Switch.
What is the Witch Switch?
The story goes like this. On Halloween night, the kids leave their sweets out on the table. While they sleep, the Witch Switch comes and swaps them for a toy, waiting for them when they wake up.
That’s it. No lecture about sugar, no confiscating the haul, no being the villain. The witch does the dirty work.

The first year was a disaster
The first year I tried it, there were lots and lots of tears. Asking small kids to give up ALL their sweets? Not a chance. To be fair, I wouldn’t have handed mine over either.
So I changed the rules a little.
Our Witch Switch rules
- Each child picks 6 to 10 of their absolute favourites to keep.
- Everything else goes on the table for the Witch Switch.
- The swap happens overnight, and something’s waiting in the morning.
It became one of the best bits of Halloween. All the sweets get tipped out on the floor, and the kids give such serious consideration to which ones make the cut, like a tiny selection panel. Then they happily hand over the rest. Less sugar, no tears, happy kids.
One year the Witch Switch left Harry Potter onesies. Three years later, they still wear them every year from Halloween right up to Christmas. Better value than a bag of fizzy cola bottles, anyway.
Why the Witch Switch works
It gives kids an out they might actually want themselves. They’re not losing Halloween, they’re choosing it. Nobody’s told no. They decide what’s worth keeping.
That’s pretty much how we think about food at Juspy too. We were never interested in the all-or-nothing approach, where treats are the enemy and you white-knuckle your way through. Juspy started with a simple question: why can’t the good stuff taste like a treat? So that’s what we make: functional nutrition that tastes like a treat, with researched ingredients and honest doses, made in Ireland.
Same idea as the Witch Switch, really. Keep the bits you love. Swap out the bits that aren’t doing you any favours. Doing less is the whole point.
A treat for the grown-ups
Once the kids are finally asleep and the witch has done her rounds, you’ve earned something too. A Juspy mocha on the couch is the go-to in our house: 25g of Juspy blend stirred into hot milk with a shot of coffee. Tastes like a treat, without the rollercoaster.
Try it this year
The Witch Switch costs one toy and saves a week of sugar-fuelled chaos. If you give it a go, tag us and show us what made the cut.
