We talk a lot about starting your day the Juspy way, but what does this actually mean? You’ll hear a lot that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and we really do believe that to be true - eating a balanced breakfast has been shown to reduce circulating levels of ghrelin, also known as the ‘hunger hormone’ by up to 20–25% compared with skipping breakfast, which helps regulate appetite and reduces the likelihood of overeating later in the day (Leidy et al., Obesity, 2011). Starting your day with something nutritious and absolutely divine sets the tone for a great day, and it’s something to look forward to when you get up!
One of the main parts of starting your day the ‘Juspy’ way is a breakfast that’s packed with protein. A high protein breakfast is super important for a number of reasons. For one, protein is known to keep you fuller for longer, so starting the day with a boost of protein means that you’re properly fueled for whatever the morning may throw at you. According to Leidy et al (2013), women who start their day with a breakfast containing around 30g of protein feel fuller for longer and are less likely to crave sugary snacks later on in the day. You’re less likely to crash, with the protein giving you sustained energy throughout the day.
As well as that, protein is incredibly important for muscle growth and repair. After fasting overnight, a boost of protein in your breakfast helps to support your muscles and give your metabolism a gentle nudge to get you firing on all cylinders for the day!
A great breakfast should be balanced, but the rest is up to you. When you combine some smart ingredients, a balanced breakfast should high in protein, but also rich in fibre for digestion and fullness, full of micronutrients for immunity, skin, and brain function, balanced with slow-release carbs, good fats, and antioxidants, and supportive of recovery, and mood, all while still being convenient.
One fantastic way to break an overnight fast is by combining oats with protein in your breakfast. This delivers a great mix of protein, carbs and fibre. One recipe which combines oats and protein is the classic Juspy Overnight Oats. This supercharged recipe brings some breakfast heroes together into one super satisfying and tasty start to the day. Oats are a great source of slow release carbohydrates, meaning that they give sustained energy throughout the day without any spikes, as well as being high in fibre. This recipe also gets added fibre from the addition of chia seeds, which are an absolute powerhouse when it comes to digestion and gut health. We also add greek yoghurt for some extra protein, as well as probiotics to support gut health.
