Juspy Truffles

This week we asked one of our competition winners Dee to write up a recipe we spotted on her Instagram. After her prize arrived she started baking different healthy treats and one we just had to share!

I started my Instagram page @makeanddee 3 months ago as I realised a lot of people had taken up training in lockdown and were struggling to hit their Protein target – myself included!  I started weight training in January and adhering to a high protein diet which absolutely contributed to my muscle gain. I believe strong is the new skinny.

Protein helps reduce muscle soreness, promotes muscle repair, and helps boost glycogen storage. But it also keeps you fuller for longer because it reduces your level of ghrelin – a hunger hormone.

I love to bake and creating high protein snack is so much fun! I was lucky enough to win a couple of bags of Juspy recently. Honestly, I feel like I manifested it, as I was out of my usual chocolate protein powder and was craving chocolate!

I had heard of Juspy and was planning on buying some, so it was totally serendipitous! I love the rich chocolate flavour Juspy gives to a recipe without the need for further cocoa to a recipe. I have used it for these truffles, in my Oat Protein Ball and my Power Muffins Recipes with great success.

In 3 weeks, I will turn 39 so winning a two months’ supply of a gorgeous cacao and collagen supplement with 17g of protein per scoop was amazing! Juspy is gloriously chocolatey and anything that will help with decreasing collagen is the best. It’s mad to think that you start to loose collagen from the age of 25!

This is not an ad; it is truly something I have tried and loved. I entered the Dr.Coys and Juspy competition on Instagram because I was curious about the product and wanted to see the difference from the protein powders I already have.

I love to make healthy treats like pancakes, butterbean cookies, Juspy truffles, chocolate hummus and much more. But I enjoyed making these Juspy truffles so much I wanted to share this simple recipe. There is only 87kcal in each, 5g protein and 8000mg of Collagen.

What’s This About Protein?

We are sure you have heard that having more protein in your diet is a good thing? But that is typically followed by the question, how do I do that? What has protein in it? And enough to make a difference? How much should I have and at what meals? The quick and long answer is the amount of protein you need depends on who you are and what you do. No, we are not talking about your career here!
What we mean is that it depends on your body type and what you get it to do every day i.e. Are you busy? Do you work-out? What’s your weight? What do you need protein for – weight management, muscle recovery or maintenance? Stay Fuller Longer We are of the mindset that you should have protein with every meal. Even a small amount. And our reasoning for that is we love the satiety that comes with it. You feel fuller longer and and satisfied, which means you can get on with your day. What better way to start this day, than in the morning eating delicious protein pancakes. They are such an easy way to get goodness into you, nourishing your body inside-out. Protein pancakes are super easy to make. All you need is some base ingredients like oats or flour, egg, liquid of some sort and then it’s all up to you. You might want to add some natural sweetness or fruit into the mix, or leave those for your toppings after. They are a great way to get the kids to eat a wholesome breakfast too. They believe they are having a treat and you know they are full of the good stuff. It’s a great way to trick yourself too! When it comes to toppings, be as creative as you want. We love crème fraiche and berries. Or you can add any combination of yogurt, honey, maple syrup, seeds, lemon juice, coconut nectar. Where ever the mood takes you. Topping choices are endless. Our Juspy Pancake recipe is to die for and we are not over exaggerating! Juspy has raw cacao in it which means these babies are chocolate flavour! They are so simple to make and packed with protein (collagen, pean and rice protein blend) and superfood ingredients.   Juspy Protein Pancake Recipe Your first decision is whether you like them smooth or hearty. For smooth you will need a blender (Nutribullet or the like). For hearty ones, you will just need a potato masher or wooden spoon). Then you need ingredients for your base recipe:
  • 40g Juspy protein powder blend (for 17g protein). Judge this for your own palette though. If less chocolatiness is required you may want a little less
  • 2 Eggs
  • A splash of your favourite milk (I say splash because these work better as droplet pancakes, American style for flipping)
  • A half cup of oats (again if you want them more dense than add a little more)
  • A little real butter or coconut oil to fry with
At Juspy HQ we also add:
  • 1 big tablespoon of nut butter (optional)
  • 1-2 bananas (2 for 2-3 people)
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of bread soda
Our usual topping list:
  • Natural Yogurt (Optional
  • Fresh berries (some people we know add frozen berries to the pancake mix above while cooking on the heat)
  • Maple Syrup (just a drizzle on the yogurt
  • Nuts (if they don’t go in the mix itself)
Get all your ingredients together in a blender. Mix for 20- 30 seconds. We use a dessert spoon to size out the amount onto a heated pan. Make sure to cook them on a medium heat. Once you spot some bubbles on top, flip the pancake over for a minute or two. Then put your pancakes onto a plate and add your toppings. It’s that easy!
Go on and boost that immune system. Give yourself the best start to the day. Help keep that mid-morning fatigue at bay and start it with one wack of an energy boost! We bet you will stay full until well passed your usual! These pancakes super supplement your breakfast option. Make sure to share your Juspy protein pancakes by tagging @Juspyorginal on Instagram and use the hashtag #juspyinthemix. We want to see what you add to yours.

Marine Collagen The New Hero Ingredient on Everyone’s Lips

Marine Collagen The New Hero Ingredient on Everyone’s Lips

When you hear the word collagen what do you think of? Probably Botox and lip fillers? Or maybe not. Maybe you are one of the new trend of people hearing about the wonders of collagen as a nutritional supplement. I am one of those people too.

I started taking collagen powder in 2015 as a substitute for other protein powders. I hated the taste of whey proteins and most of the plant proteins at the time smelled like socks. Collagen for me was a way to keep my protein intake up after exercise. It helped my body repair itself. It helped my connective tissues heal after a c-section and childbirth. I loved it even more so because it mixed with everything and had no smell and a neutral taste. I used to add it to my smoothies and even my coffee.

When it came to product development for Juspy there was no question that it had to be in there. There are so many reasons why. Here are some of them:

Building Blocks of the Body

Collagen makes up the building blocks of the body. While we are all lucky enough to have collagen making capabilities in our youth, as we get older (even though 25 is far from that) we begin to lose it. That means we are constantly losing our ability to produce it on our own.

The Type 1 collagen that is in our bones, tendons and ligaments and skin and weakens over time. For our skin it is responsible for its elasticity, firmness and smoothness.  For most of us that means that we lose the plump nature of our skin, our bodies start to creek more and we need more help nutritionally to move and recover better.

Where does marine collagen come from you ask? Common sources are Marine (fish) and Bovine (cow). Does the marine collagen smell and taste like fish? Interestingly enough yes and no. It all depends on the grade of collagen peptides you take. For the higher grade powders there is no odour or taste of fish.

Collagen for Skin Health, Hair & Nails

Aging of the skin is inevitable. We cannot stop that train. However, there is nothing stopping us keeping our skin looking vibrant, hydrated and healthy. This in turn helps our little fine lines plump out naturally. Collagen can help the skins firmness and elasticity and help support our efforts to look fresh faced beyond our years. Marine collagen is made up of amino acids: lysine, glycine and hydroxyproline, anti-oxidants that can help with inflammation and protect against cell damage.

Collagen for Sports Nutrition

While so many people are aware of the benefits and recovery properties of protein post exercise, not enough are aware of the benefits of collagen for the same purpose. It can be used pre, during or post exercise for fuelling or recovering after. Collagen has been linked in various trials to muscle building, joint and connective tissue protection, athletic performance improvement, anti-inflammatory activities and satiety affects (Weishardt 2020).

Collagen for Joint Health and Reduces Inflammation

When we think of joint health we may say to ourselves, sure I am only 35 what do I need to care about my joints for. Well the truth is, if you are moving and if you exercise you should be concerned with keeping your joint subtle and healthy. Today more than ever, the world is a more health conscious place with more and more people are running and walking regularly and recreationally. Collagen may keep your joints in great shape and we pile on the km’s on the road and on the bike.

So all in all we truly believe is an all-rounder, a hero ingredient that has benefits for most. Especially if you are over the age of 25, want to look fresh faced with beautiful locks and healthy nails. Especially if you move your body and want to be able to keep it that way. Inside out it is great!
