Food Innovation Product of the Year 2022

May I introduce you to our 3rd award for Juspy since we launched it in October 2020. Hopefully this is a good indication of the year ahead.

This time our magic powder has been given the title of ‘Food Innovation Product of the Year’.

Why is it innovative – well let me tell you.

The main reason is our unique combination of fantastic ingredients that make this health food blend taste like health shouldn’t.

The second reason is we do not offer you a supplement you ‘should’ take. We offer you lifestyle nourishment you will crave. A product that gives you autonomy in your DIY health efforts.

There are so many ways you can use Juspy. Here are a ways people use it right now:

1. The breakfast club – the on the go smoothie lover that like to cram a lot of health into one shaker so they are set up for the day.
2. The coffee club – the 11am-ers who use our Juspy to kickstart their morning.
3. The 3pm slumpers (like me), who use it to reset their day.
4. The post-workout peeps. They reboot and recover with 8g collagen and 17g protein per serve.
5. The hot cacao club – the wind downers, hug in a mug snugglers.

So there you have it. Juspy is fabulous and you need it in your life.

Marine Collagen The New Hero Ingredient on Everyone’s Lips

Marine Collagen The New Hero Ingredient on Everyone’s Lips

When you hear the word collagen what do you think of? Probably Botox and lip fillers? Or maybe not. Maybe you are one of the new trend of people hearing about the wonders of collagen as a nutritional supplement. I am one of those people too.

I started taking collagen powder in 2015 as a substitute for other protein powders. I hated the taste of whey proteins and most of the plant proteins at the time smelled like socks. Collagen for me was a way to keep my protein intake up after exercise. It helped my body repair itself. It helped my connective tissues heal after a c-section and childbirth. I loved it even more so because it mixed with everything and had no smell and a neutral taste. I used to add it to my smoothies and even my coffee.

When it came to product development for Juspy there was no question that it had to be in there. There are so many reasons why. Here are some of them:

Building Blocks of the Body

Collagen makes up the building blocks of the body. While we are all lucky enough to have collagen making capabilities in our youth, as we get older (even though 25 is far from that) we begin to lose it. That means we are constantly losing our ability to produce it on our own.

The Type 1 collagen that is in our bones, tendons and ligaments and skin and weakens over time. For our skin it is responsible for its elasticity, firmness and smoothness.  For most of us that means that we lose the plump nature of our skin, our bodies start to creek more and we need more help nutritionally to move and recover better.

Where does marine collagen come from you ask? Common sources are Marine (fish) and Bovine (cow). Does the marine collagen smell and taste like fish? Interestingly enough yes and no. It all depends on the grade of collagen peptides you take. For the higher grade powders there is no odour or taste of fish.

Collagen for Skin Health, Hair & Nails

Aging of the skin is inevitable. We cannot stop that train. However, there is nothing stopping us keeping our skin looking vibrant, hydrated and healthy. This in turn helps our little fine lines plump out naturally. Collagen can help the skins firmness and elasticity and help support our efforts to look fresh faced beyond our years. Marine collagen is made up of amino acids: lysine, glycine and hydroxyproline, anti-oxidants that can help with inflammation and protect against cell damage.

Collagen for Sports Nutrition

While so many people are aware of the benefits and recovery properties of protein post exercise, not enough are aware of the benefits of collagen for the same purpose. It can be used pre, during or post exercise for fuelling or recovering after. Collagen has been linked in various trials to muscle building, joint and connective tissue protection, athletic performance improvement, anti-inflammatory activities and satiety affects (Weishardt 2020).

Collagen for Joint Health and Reduces Inflammation

When we think of joint health we may say to ourselves, sure I am only 35 what do I need to care about my joints for. Well the truth is, if you are moving and if you exercise you should be concerned with keeping your joint subtle and healthy. Today more than ever, the world is a more health conscious place with more and more people are running and walking regularly and recreationally. Collagen may keep your joints in great shape and we pile on the km’s on the road and on the bike.

So all in all we truly believe is an all-rounder, a hero ingredient that has benefits for most. Especially if you are over the age of 25, want to look fresh faced with beautiful locks and healthy nails. Especially if you move your body and want to be able to keep it that way. Inside out it is great!

Confessions of a chocoholic

I can smell chocolate 500m away. I can sense it in my deepest soul when it’s near.

In our house growing up we used to say ‘are you chocolatey’ when we had PMS because I would turn into a raving chocolate maniac leading up to my monthlies.

In my early twenties when I was most controlling about my food. I was such a clean eater. Everything was juicing, smoothies, salads and good food. I would limit everything, no portion size that was never my thing, but I would limit ‘badness’. Never ever ate a takeaway, chips, chinese, pizza. I would turn my nose up at it all. But chocolate …. I used to stash in my sisters house (which was next door) to put limitations on myself. She would tell this funny story how herself and her flatmates would be sitting in the evening watching TV and they would see me pass by the window. But I wasn’t coming in to hang out or even say hi. Two minutes later they would see me pass back. I was going in to get a piece of chocolate that I had in her cupboards.

When we were kids Easter was hilarious. All of my eggs were hoovered up on the day by me. My sister would still have some in October, I would find them (with my great sense of smell). In the presses I would sneak a piece and put it back. She could always eat a small piece and leave it. I never understood that.

As an adult my mum would ring me and say ‘were you in my house… well it was either you or a little mouse.” I had called in for one reason or another but I knew where the chocolate was hidden and I would go and devour.

Eating behind the fridge door is a common occurrence. My husband always says ‘just sit down and eat the whole thing.’ But I still don’t. I go to the fridge and take a square. And go back 5 minutes later. If my daughter comes into the room I wouldn’t dare kiss her in case she smelled the chocolate off me.

If it’s there it’s gone. I have bought chocolate for my husband but if he doesn’t get it before I do, then tough luck. It’s gone. Especially if I am working from home. Too late! If he buys some for ‘the house’. I will eat my one and then everyone else’s.

Interestingly I hate chocolate cake and chocolate ice-cream.

I wish people would limit me. I buy those Kelkin Rice cakes. I have never not eaten 6 of them. I always feel a little bit sick after the lot because it’s just too much. 3 would be perfect. Everything needs to be halved.

I have often asked my husband to hide the stuff, the chocolate when he brings it into the house. His response is usually  ‘cop on you’re an adult!’

When he buys chocolate I don’t like I say ‘’eww’. He replies ‘don’t eat it so’. That never happens! Even a horrible substitute he bought doesn’t stand a chance.

Last week I was driving from Dublin and bought Toffees (12 pack). I took out 6 and threw the box back to the boot so I couldn’t get at them. The glove compartment doesn’t work because I can reach over (tried and tested).

Last Easter my husband bought some chocolate eggs. A week later they looked untouched from the outside. On the inside they were missing all of the accompanying sweets. I am a pro at getting out the small packet out of the box without opening it. If I see it I eat it! This was a lot harder in the 80s when the sweets were on the inside of the egg!

When I created juspy, taste was the most important thing. It had to be good enough to make me feel like I was eating something bad, but I wanted it to be good. Guilt out, goodness in. I wanted it to be functional with some nutritional value. I love real ingredients that help your health. Every ingredient in this has a purpose. Recovery, energy, anti-inflammatory, healthy life, skin focus- an inside out approach.

Juspy tastes like a luxurious chocolate treat but is actually pure goodness. We sneak the good stuff in and hide it in divine organic cacao. Made with 10 natural ingredients, no refined sugar, no stabilisers, no additives and lots of goodness. We worked with leading nutrition company Nutritics (who are also the team behind Natasha’s Law UK Food Labelling Resource) so that we could provide you with a full breakdown of all nutrients and why each serving packs such a punch.
